Explore new galaxies of color with the Intergalactic shawlette, a gently curved, asymmetrical triangle that drapes beautifully for lightweight warmth and year-round style.
The Inspiration for Intergalactic
Intergalactic was inspired by the out-of-this-world color, texture and sheen of Palouse Yarn Company’s Merino Fine. When I saw it in bright lime green (Truly Marisa) and rich purple (Intergalactic Bubblegum), I knew I had to design something special with them. The colors and the name of the purple yarn conjured up visions of intergalactic dust clouds, galaxies and stars. After much sketching, dreaming and swatching, Intergalactic was born.
My Favorite Features of Intergalactic:
- Textural interest without the bulk of garter stitch
- The colored knots that look like stars
- How well it looks in bold, subtle or tonal colorways
- The selvedges which are designed to give Intergalactic clean edges, to minimize curl to front of work, and to create the unique shape of the shawl.
- Both the charts and written instructions are color-coded for ease of use.

Acknowledgements
This adventure would not have been possible without the support of a number of talented and generous people. Linda Cronquist, Jen Lewis and Kelly O’Neill generously donated their time and expertise to test knit the pattern. Kelly O’Neill and Amanda Argona were fabulous at modeling the test knits. Stitchmastery’s Knitting Chart Editor made chart-making a breeze. I am daily grateful for a husband that supports my obsession with knitting and yarn stashing. And finally, thank you to Shelley Stone of the Palouse Yarn Company for her yarn-dyeing genius and encouragement.

curious about these 2 sts, ptfl and ktfl
purl thru front loop, how does that differ from a standard purl?
same question knit thru front loop?
I do understand knit thru back loop to twist the st. same as purl thru back loop to twist the purl st.
ready to knit it in some bold colors.

Hi JoLYnn! It differs from the standard purl because unlike with a regular purl, the front loop is the trailing (left) leg of the stitch rather than the leading (right) leg of the stitch. The goal is to twist the stitch to the right instead of to the left (as is normally done with twisted stitches). This helps to keep the edge from curling to the front of the work.
